Philco 642
This is a 1936 Philco model 642. It's a 32 volt farm set that can receive 2 bands on shortwave as well as AM. The 32 volt radios were designed for farms and locations utilizing 32 volt generators. A common problem when purchasing a set like this is that all (or nearly all) the tubes are burned out. Someone in their zeal to 'try it out' plugs the set in, turns it on and poof! A brief flash of light from some of the tubes and the set is dead. My advice is that if you don't know anything about a radio, and it has not been checked out, do not plug it in to try it out. The radio can be severly damaged or worse yet, you could be injured. No radio is worth an injury. I have seen people plug in a set that had almost no insulation on the line cord just to try it out! This is very dangerous!! Resist the temptation and have the radio checked by someone who knows what they are doing. This set was refinished as it had almost no finish left on it when purchased. I have located replacement tubes, but have not had time to build a power supply for it so I have not played it yet. Someday...
